Your nails can speak volumes about your overall health. While certain nail problems are minor, others can be a symptom of serious health conditions.
What Your Tips Say About You
1. Pale Nails
If your nails have been looking paler than usual, it could point to anemia. With this condition, the body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells and there is typically an iron deficiency. Other potential causes of white nails can include liver disease and malnutrition.
2. Yellowed Nails
One culprit of yellowed nails is a fungal infection which causes the nail bed to retract, thicken, and eventually crumble. Paronychia, a skin infection, is a possibility as well. It tends to occur in people with diabetes or in those who have their hands in water for prolonged periods. Yellowed nails could also be an indication of more serious issues including thyroid disease, lung disease, diabetes, or psoriasis.
3. Cracked Nails
Brittle nails that frequently crack or split can point to thyroid disease. However, if the cracking or splitting is combined with a yellowish hue, it’s more likely due to a fungal infection.
4. Rippled Nails
If the nail bed is rippled, this may be an early sign of psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis. In either of these conditions, nail discoloration is common and the underlying skin might appear reddish-brown.
